Antonievo-Siysky monastery is located near the city of Arkhangelsk, about 120 kilometers along
the road Arkhangelsk - Moscow. It is located in a picturesque place, among forests and lakes.
The founder of the Siysky Monastery is Anthony with six associates in
1520 on the Mikhailovsky Peninsula, near a small river built a chapel, cells, and in 1525 received a princely decree recognizing the newly formed monastery with securing occupied land for it.
The rumor of a new abode soon spread to surrounding places. The number of brethren began
to increase, expand land ownership. Three wooden churches were built - Troitskaya,
Blagoveshchenskaya, Sergey Radonezhsky. Anthony made a strict charter of monastic life. He
himself jealously guarded his spirit, killing the flesh with grueling tests; twice removed for
silence, for a long time in solitary places. The complete submission of the flesh to the spirit
endowed Anthony with the gift of insight, the ability to recognize human thoughts. Anthony died
at the age of 79 years old and was buried at the Trinity Cathedral near the altar. In 1579 the
canonization of the saint took place, the celebration of Anthony Siysky was established on
December 7, on the day of his death.
The canonization of Anthony elevated the value of the monastery. The monastery receives great royal awards. The construction of stone churches begins. Above the burial place of the founder of the monastery is built the New Trinity
Cathedral.
Large footprint in the spiritual culture of the North of the XVII century. left Abbess Theodosius
and Nicodemus - worthy successors to the founder of the monastery. In the XVII century Siysky
Monastery strengthened expanding land ownership. Several small monasteries are attributed to
him; it acquires the value of the church and administrative center of the northern region.
