Arkhangelsk

Arkhangelsk, the administrative, industrial and cultural center of the Arkhangelsk Region, is situated on the banks of the Northern Dvina, not far from the place where it flows into the White Sea. It was founded in 1584 by the order of Ivan the Terrible, one of the greatest tsars in the history of Russia.

The State Museum of Wooden Architecture Malye Karelie

Near to Arkhangelsk, at the village of Malye Karelie, the State Museum of Wooden Architecture is located between the hills of the Northern Dvina Region. More than 104 wooden buildings were brought here from the riverbanks of the northern rivers (Pinega, Mezen, Dvina and Onega). Technical and artistic methods of carpentry have been developed and perfected for centuries.

Novodvinsk fortress

The Novodvinsk fortress was founded in 1701 by an order of Peter the Great to protect Arkhangelsk from possible attacks from the seaside. All construction works were finished in 1721. The chief architect was George Rese. Garrison of the fortress could count up to 1000 soldiers.

Kargopol

The first mention of Kargopol in written sources dates back to 1380. In the Nikon Chronicle there is a mention of the fact that the Kargopol prince Gleb brought his squad under the banner of the great Moscow Prince Dmitry Donskoy and participated in the Kulikovo battle. The city of Kargopol itself (in the old acts of the Cargo Field) was mentioned in 1447, when Dmitry Yuryevich Shemyak found refuge here, fleeing from the persecution of Grand Duke Vasily the Dark.

Lomonosovo village

Lomonosovo village, where the great Russian scientist Mikhail Vasilyevich Lomonosov was born, got its name at 1911. In the time of Lomonosov there were two villages, placed near by each other. They were called Myshaninskaya and Denisovka. Because of this fact there is a confusion, which village was the motherland of the scientist. At the middle of XVIII century Dmitrievsky temple was built there, instead of burnt wooden church. The temple is standing still, inactive, it is an object of cultural heritage. In addition to it, there are some more places of interest in the village.

Antonievo-Siysky monastery

Antonievo-Siysky monastery is located near the city of Arkhangelsk, about 120 kilometers along the road Arkhangelsk - Moscow. It is located in a picturesque place, among forests and lakes. The founder of the Siysky Monastery is Anthony with six associates in 1520 on the Mikhailovsky Peninsula, near a small river built a chapel, cells, and in 1525 received a princely decree recognizing the newly formed monastery with securing occupied land for it.

Kizhi pogost

Kizhi Pogost is a historical site dating from the 17th century on Kizhi island. The island is located on Lake Onega in the Republic of Karelia. The pogost is the area inside a fence which includes two large wooden churches (the 22-dome Transfiguration Church and the 9-dome Intercession Church) and a bell-tower. The pogost is famous for its beauty and longevity, despite that it is built exclusively of wood. In 1990, it was included in the UNESCO list of World Heritage sites and in 1993 listed as a Russian Cultural Heritage site.

Solovetski Monastery

Golubino park

The Tarakaniy Log canyon stretches for more than 2 km in the gypsum rock massif. On one side of the log you can see a high steep cliff on the other - a heap of boulders overgrown with moss and juniper among which grow northern beauties - Venus shoes and other plants listed in the Red Book. The height of the walls reaches 35 meters, the width is about 100 meters. The canyon can be reached on foot from the tourist complex either as part of an excursion group or independently.
